The Gatorade Protein Bar vs. Healthy Truth Protein Bars

In this article, we compare two very popular and premium-quality meal replacement bars. Read on to learn about the comparison between the Gatorade Protein Bar and Healthy Truth’s Protein Bars.

Protein bars are nutritious, ready-to-eat, portable snacks that go wherever you go. You can take a protein bar with you for before or after you hit the gym, take it in the car or on an airplane, or to the office (which many people do who are looking for a quick snack). But protein bars are a serious business.

The global protein bar market is projected to grow from $4.68 billion in 2022 to $7.07 billion by 2029. Two popular choices for protein bars are the Gatorade protein bar and Healthy Truth protein bars. Let’s evaluate both options with some important criteria.

Taste matters

If you are considering eating protein bars as a healthy snack or even a meal replacement, you want to know how they taste. The Gatorade protein bar offers flavors such as chocolate chip, cookies and cream, and peanut butter chocolate. Healthy Truth protein bars have flavors such as mixed berry, blueberry cobbler, and cacao. These products are similarly sized, with the Gatorade protein bar weighing in at 2.8 oz. and the Healthy Truth protein bar at 2.3 oz.

Numerous customers have reviewed the Gatorade protein bar and commented that it is much too sweet. They have even said that it feels like eating a dessert. In comparison, reviews from Healthy Truth’s customers say these bars have the “perfect amount of sweetness.” Several customers also mention that the Healthy Truth Protein Bar is always fresh.

Let’s break down the nutritional value

When comparing the two products, we wondered why some customers commented that the Gatorade protein bar was “too sweet.” It turns out that these products contain 29 grams of sugar (including 28 grams of added sugar) per bar! A 12 oz. can of regular Coke contains 39 grams of sugar (about 10 teaspoons), which is more than 80% of the recommended daily intake for a healthy diet. One Gatorade Protein Bar also contains 10 grams of saturated fat or 49% of your daily allowance. At 350 calories, the Gatorade protein bar is marketed as being developed with protein and carbs for athletes. Each bar has 20 grams of “high-quality whey and milk protein and 41 grams of carbohydrates.”

Next, we checked out the nutritional components of Healthy Truth protein bars. At 280 calories per bar, they contain 18 grams of natural sugar with no added sugars. One Healthy Truth protein bar contains 4.5 grams of saturated fat, or 23% of your daily allowance. Each bar contains 15 to 18 grams (depending upon the flavor) of organic, sprouted, plant-based protein. A Healthy Truth protein bar is considered a raw food, meaning that it is completely unprocessed. People who subscribe to a raw diet believe that eating raw foods can improve their health and well-being and possibly reduce the risk of medical conditions.

Not all proteins are created equal

Protein plays an essential role in the functioning of the human body. It helps repair and build tissues, builds muscle, helps maintain a healthy weight, and more. Typically, if you are eating a balanced diet, you are getting an adequate amount of protein from your food. But athletes who play sports and work out hard or anyone trying to lose weight may wish to supplement with protein bars. Protein is a “macronutrient,” which means we need relatively large amounts of it to stay healthy, and our bodies do not store protein, so we need to consume it daily.

One type of protein you probably have heard of is called whey protein. Whey protein, a byproduct of the cheese-making process, is one of the primary proteins found in dairy products. People with allergies or sensitivity to dairy products should not use whey protein, and it’s worth noting that the Gatorade protein bar contains this ingredient.  Therefore, this product does not score high for dietary friendliness.

In contrast, Healthy Truth protein bars are made with pea protein and sacha inchi protein. This may sound complex, but it’s really not. Sacha inchi is a Peruvian plant that produces edible seeds rich in nutrients.

It is considered a complete protein because it has all the essential amino acids needed to build and maintain lean muscle mass. Pea protein is often derived mechanically from ground yellow split peas (versus chemical separation, often used for soy and whey proteins); it retains more soluble fiber, which ultimately has a positive effect on cardiovascular health. So, the protein found in a Healthy Truth protein bar is organic, plant-based, dairy-free, and gluten-free. A word of caution if you have allergies: the Healthy Truth protein bar is produced in a facility with nuts.

The better choice…?

If you desire a tasty, healthy protein bar with natural ingredients, a Healthy Truth protein bar is the better choice. Healthy Truth protein bars do cost more than the Gatorade protein bar for a package of 12 bars; however, the health benefits of an organic, raw protein bar with limited sugar and clean ingredients are worth it. Plus, if you opt to subscribe rather than to place a one-time order on the Healthy Truth website, you’ll get a 20% discount.

Bruce Namenson, the founder of Healthy Truth, has also earned the title, “Chief Creative Officer,” because he develops all the recipes for this standout company’s products. Namenson stated in a recent interview: “You can get enormous flavor out of natural ingredients. I think about the mainstream and what they would like. We use no preservatives. We are one of the only raw food protein bars on the planet, so basically the wet ingredients and dry ingredients are mixed, packaged, and out the door.”  Healthy Truth’s dedication to raw products helps this brand to create one of the cleanest protein bars on the market.

Many people assume that all protein bars must be good for them. While both the Gatorade protein bar and Healthy Truth protein bars provide nutritional benefits, you should read the product labels to ensure you are getting natural ingredients and not a ton of extra sugar when you reach for your snack.  If you do your research and choose the right brand, a protein bar can pack a powerful nutritional punch without sacrificing taste.  There’s a delicious product out there that can also deliver exactly what you need for optimum health.
